How much do marital dramas matter?

“The news media seem obsessed with the serial affairs of a younger Newt Gingrich back in the last century. The anger of his second of three wives mysteriously became national news on ABC’s “Nightline” on the eve of the South Carolina primary. Millions watched Mrs. Gingrich II complain that Newt and the present Mrs. Gingrich III had done to her (while ill) just about the same thing that she and Newt had earlier done to Mrs. Gingrich I (while ill).

Do these marital dramas involving our leaders matter that much? At some point, does long-ago adultery earn a statute of limitations? Do we forgive a few, but not serial, transgressions? Do we really care to learn the back-and-forth, he said/she said details? And do leaders have to be exceptionally talented to atone for extremely poor marital behavior?

There have been plenty of unfaithful presidents, a few who could not even suppress their libidos upon entering the White House. Long before Bill Clinton’s dalliances, John Kennedy, Franklin Roosevelt and Warren Harding allegedly had been unfaithful to their first ladies.

Given the value of stable marriages to society, it would be nice to think that such moral failure in our presidential candidates would be a telltale warning of later flawed governance — and that anyone who cheated on a spouse would also somehow cheat the country. But the truth unfortunately is more complex. The extracurricular Clinton proved a better president than the faithful Jimmy Carter. The reckless Kennedy served more honestly than did the seemingly devoted Richard Nixon. And the two-timing FDR was considered more successful than the monogamous Herbert Hoover.

Yet there are so many factors involved in both successful marriage and skilled leadership that it is impossible to isolate one trait — even one as critical as fidelity — as an absolute barometer of future success. Some of our most inspired civilian and military heroes — Charles Lindbergh, Dwight D. Eisenhower, George S. Patton, Martin Luther King Jr. — were rumored to have had relationships outside of marriage. New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani was courting his third wife while still married to his second wife when 9/11 occurred, and yet he proved steady and reliable in a way mayors more monogamous have not during lesser disasters.

Why, then, are the marriages and indiscretions of an ascendant Gingrich now such an issue, apparently bothering the media more than primary voters?

The media usually prefer liberal politicians. Washington’s newspaper editors kept quiet about JFK’s frolicking, a silence that became near-conspiratorial. The renegade tabloid National Enquirer alone had to pursue the sordid affair of presidential candidate John Edwards. Matt Drudge forced the mainstream media to follow up on the recurrent but ignored rumors of Bill Clinton’s dalliance with Monica Lewinsky in the Oval Office. For most in the media, why sidetrack a fellow progressive’s enlightened agenda for America over an occasional hormonal urge?

But conservatives should expect such extra scrutiny. Just as populist Democrats raise eyebrows when they cozy up to Wall Street one-percenters, so too does the party of traditional family values set a higher bar for marital fidelity — and so faces the greater wage of hypocrisy. We don’t expect Bill Clinton to preach about the sanctity and stability of marriage, but we often heard that sermon from a sanctimonious Gingrich.

We are now an electronically wired 24/7 nation of the Internet, cable news, Twitter and Facebook, and sex is in our faces everywhere. In 1961, the old-boy newspaper guild alone could keep quiet JFK’s alleged rampant womanizing. Now, such a circle of silence eventually breaks down, and the lurid details seem all the more newsworthy. In a counterintuitive sense, the more dissolute Americans become, the more they hope that at least their presidents might resist the temptations of the modern world that they themselves cannot.

We all would like to think Gingrich’s long-ago adulteries must warn us that he would make a less reliable, more erratic president than the apparently faithful Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum, Ron Paul or Barack Obama. But there seems little evidence from history that such a logical conclusion is always true — and none adduced so far by our biased media why it should be.

Maybe that’s why the voters of conservative South Carolina apparently did not think whom or how many times the mercurial Newt Gingrich has married mattered more than how he has so far debated and addressed the issues.”

PANETTA DISARMING US MILITARY

Another part of the Obama plan to “transform” America is now laid out for all to see.  With the announced “reduction in force” for our Armed Forces, we will be able to be everywhere and fight nowhere.  For sure, we will be able to act quickly, but never decisively.  We will have no resources to deal with anything unexpected.  Consequently, we will need to expect everything and anything.

“Leaner and meaner” says the Obama Regime, led by DOD Pacifist Panetta and parroting our “highly decorated” Community-Organizer-in-Chief.  Apparently, this pronouncement  is designed to make us feel secure in an insecure world.  It is also designed to cut national expense to pay for the humongous deficits Obama has rung up to buy allegiance and enrich coffers of his cronies.

This “plan” shrinks our Army and Marine Corps down to pre- 9/11 levels while slowing or halting new weapons programs, including replacement ships and planes for the Navy and Airforce.  This includes the next generation F-35 fighter (which was supposed to be ruling the skies by 2020 but will now be relegated to a cameo appearance).  Allegedly, this will leave enough conventional forces to fight one good long war if need be.  We likely will not be able to win it but that word WIN seems to have gone out of style these past few years…a distracion, you know.

Not to worry?  Specifics show an even more pacific posture.  The Army will shrink by 80,000 soldiers.  This will also mean elimination of at least eight Army Brigades The Marines will lose around 20,000.  (“JOBS, I tell you, JOBs is my first priority.”)  Obviously that is not “The Wons” first prority, nor is national defense.  The Air Force will be “retiring” two-dozen C5-A cargo aircraft and and 65 C-130s.  The Pentagon will also be closing six Air Force tactical air fighter squadrons and at least one training squadron.  (This will raise the SEIU to orgasmic heights.)  The Navy will not be spared.  No new Virginia-class submarines, of course.  Lets also ditch seven cruisers.  Why not throw in two amphibious ships for good measure?  Although Obama still wants to further reduce America’s nuclear might, he will postpone further reductions to another day.

“This is the force for the future,” Panetta proudly announced.  He sees “some” risk but nothing we can’t handle.  Panetta cannot see to the end of his considerable nose.  Hear the phrase, “A tiger does not change his spots”?  Panetta has not changed his over the decades of his (dis)”service” to America.  Lest we forget or never knew, be enlightened  as to who our new DOD Chief really is.

The “Institute of Policy Studies” is funded by that champion of American Exceptionalism, George Soros.  Panetta has long been involved with this left-wing organization.  When in Congress in the 1980s, Panetta requested the IPS produce an “alternative” budget that dramatically cut defense spending.  Panetta voted AGAINST reaffirmation of the Mutual Defense treaty with Taiwan and in support of continuing foreign aid to the Communist Sandanista government of Nicaragua.  He voted also to cede control of the Panama Canal.  Panetta also slammed what he called President Reagan’s “illegal and extraordinarily vicious” wars against rhw poor of Nicaragua, Guatemala, and El Salvado

                                                    DOD Chieftain, Leon Panetta

Want a bit more?  Can you handle it?  There is even more that you will want to research yourself to determine who, in addition to Obama, is involved in the weakening and destruction of the United States.

Panetta was very much a vocal opponent of Chile’s anti-communist government.  On 19 July 1983 the future DOD Boss, on the floor of the House, condemned what he called the “US sponsored covert actions against Nicaragua,” stating that it was among the most dangerous aspects or the Reagan administration policy in Central America.”

Writing in the “New American” several weeks ago, Chrisian Gomez notes, “Careful observation of former Rep Panetta’s record in the House reveals a history of votes perceivable as in contrast with US national security objectives which, if confirmed as Secretary of Defense may compromise US national defense objectives.”

Ya think?  But now here he is, joining with the Obama Clique in another capacity, this time perhaps even more dangerous to America than he was with the CIA.

Barry Goldwater said years ago, “If I err on national defense, may it be on the side of  too much instead of not enough.”

Gingrich Takes On The MSM

“The Republican re-embrace of former Speaker Newt Gingrich says a lot about whom he sees as his opponent — and it isn’t just President Barack Obama. It’s the media.

If not for major media’s embrace, Obama would still be sitting in the Senate, perhaps mulling another run for the presidency. A UCLA economist-political scientist recently tried to measure how the liberal media bias influences the way people vote. He concluded that this bias gives the Democrat candidate 8 to 10 percentage points.

Republicans understand this. So does Gingrich — on a very deep level. He knows the media dislike him above and beyond their anti-conservative Republican disdain. That he is testy, no-nonsense, whip smart and knowledgeable makes him formidable. That he engineered the 1994 GOP takeover of the House and pushed former President Bill Clinton into governing in the center makes him effective.

The good news for the media is that Gingrich is a Southern white male Christian Republican. He belongs to a group for which no advocacy organization exists to play the race/sex/religion card when Gingrich gets called — on-air by cable hosts and pundits — “racist,” “disgusting” and a “pig.”

Gingrich bites back. Hard. Thus, he addresses the question of his messy personal life while hitting the CNN moderator for bringing this up as the first question. Gingrich knows he lacks the Reaganesque “aw, shucks” persona. Reagan used his sunny disposition to counter the media’s attempt to portray him as a dangerous nutcase whose finger should never go near the nuclear button — not unlike how many try to portray Gingrich.

Gingrich will call out the media for ignoring the bombshell that Obama’s mother did not fight with her insurer over her medical bills, as Obama movingly and repeatedly told Americans in making his case for ObamaCare.

Gingrich will question why the major media behaved so indifferently for so long about matters like Obama’s 20-year association with a racist, anti-Semitic pastor.

Gingrich will ask why the press yawns when the Obama administration stops using expressions like “shovel ready,” “save or create” millions of jobs and “stimulus.”

Gingrich will remind Americans about Obama’s promise to end the influence of “lobbyists.” By any normal understanding of the term, the White House remains a lobby-rich environment where Obama officials insist on lobbyist meetings off-premises. This means there is no White House log, allowing the administration to brag about an alleged decrease in lobbying.

Gingrich will point out the hypocrisy of being called a “lobbyist” though he never registered as one. Yet the media fail to apply this flexible definition of “lobbyist” when it comes to the Obama administration.

Gingrich will ask why the media remain so incurious about Obama’s grades at prep school, Occidental College, Columbia University and Harvard Law — even as Obama admitted, in his first book, that he wasn’t much of a student.

Gingrich will point out the lack of left-wing outrage over our involvement in Libya. As a senator, Obama insisted that the President needed congressional approval to send troops into harm’s way — unless the country was under imminent threat. Yet for the joint bombing of Libya, a mission the Obama administration called “humanitarian,” Obama sought no congressional approval.

Gingrich will stand up against explicit or implied charges of racism. He scored by not backing down from Fox’s Juan Williams, who accused him of racial callousness for saying poor urban children lack working role models, and for calling Obama a “food stamp president.” Gingrich stood his ground and engaged in a needed, if uncomfortable, national discussion about the damage done to the family by the welfare state. This resonates with voters who are tired of being accused of racism for questioning whether the welfare state now hurts the very people it purports to help.

The White House narrative of why Obama should be re-elected is this: Obama rescued the country from destruction — and Republicans stand in his way from doing even bigger and better things for the country. Obama insists that “every economist” agrees that TARP, the bailouts and stimulus rescued an economy headed for Armageddon.

Gingrich will forcefully argue that in the early ’80s, Reagan saw higher unemployment, inflation and interest rates. But no one calls that period The Great Recession. Unlike Obama, Reagan cut taxes, slowed down the rate of domestic spending and continued deregulation. And the economy took off, averaging — by this stage in the Reagan recovery — between 6.5 and 7 percent quarterly growth vs. the current anemic 2 percent.

The media will not properly scrutinize Obama’s narrative. Count on them, however, to examine and reject Gingrich’s narrative that Obama’s policies place a dangerous and hard drag on the economy.

Gingrich has declared war on the anti-Republican media pro-liberal bias and double standard that give Democrat candidates a built in 8- to 10-point advantage. It’s about time. We’ve got a country to save.”

NEWT THE GRANDIOSE

It was more like attending a Tea-Party Rally than anything else when describing  the Newt Gingrich “Town Hall” held yesterday in Cocoa.  Even after arriving over an hour early, the best available seats (only a few still open) were way in the back, just before the plethora of cameras scheduled to catch the event.  Behind the cameras and their operators, later arrivals had to stand and peer through the wiring  and camera-guys rears.

The Gingrich speech was short (somewhere in the neighbrhood of twenty-five minutes) and to the point.  He brought his huge audience to its feet several times.  Signs, pins, and bumper stickers were sold, given away, and displayed everywhere.  One sign said “Give a Hoot and Vote for Newt.”  A Daddy in the back hoisted his two year old son on his shoulders and had the lad hold up a Newt sign.  Perhaps the cutest support came from a critter (not human…dog)

Former Attorney General Bill McCollum introduced Newt and pointed out they had served together in the House and during that time his respect for Gingrich increased almost daily.  My camera was on zoom, but even with that, we were so far back this was the best we could do.

In his address, Gingrich stuck to just one subject…Space.  At first I was puzzled by this but in thinking about it, the wisdom was clear.  This is a topic that is dear to the heart of all Space Coast residents.  They have either lost a job at NASA or know or someone who has.  As Newt got started, it was obvious that Obama would not be welcome in this Convention Center.  All were well aware of Obama essentially shutting NASA down and assigning a new mission of making Muslims feel better about themselves.

Newt promised to do Grandiose things as President of the United States.  He promised by the end of his second term America will have a COLONY on the moon.  He states it will not be cohabited by China or Russia.  He also painted a picture of all forms of space exploration, near and far, NASA and civilian.  He sees Cape Canaveral as being a genuine space-port with daily flights, much like today’s airports.

While it may have sounded a bit like tongue-in-cheek, he was dead serious.  He suggested America should provide a series of bonuses and awards for those civilians who accomplished specific missions, all of which were designed to ultimately take us to Mars.  The Awards would be in the billions.  If the independent scientists, astronauts, and engineers were successful, it would be at a much smaller price than having to pay NASA all those MULTI-billions.  If they were not successful…money not spent.

                                                                  On the Moon

If it is “red meat” that America wants, Gingrich is more than willing to provide it.  This  desire to take it to Obama, I suspect, is a driving force that has propelled Gingrich to where he is in the Polls today.  As we left the Convention Center, we walked by the Gingrich bus.  Impressive indeed.

Tomorrow Mitt Romney is scheduled to visit the Space Coast.  He will be speaking in Titusville.  The style contrast between these two is dramatic.  I would only hope and pray that both understand and keep their eye on the GOAL…send Obama back to Chicago and “retire” his minions.

The Plot Thickens

This is an email that came across our desk several days ago  Any truth to the old adage “where there is smoke there is fire?”

“An intensive investigation has revealed the identity of the man whose Social Security number (SSN) is being used by President Obama: Jean Paul Ludwig, who was born in France in 1890, immigrated to the United States in 1924, and was assigned SSN 042-68-4425 (Obama’s current SSN) on or about March 1977.

Ludwig lived most of his adult life in Connecticut . Because of that, his SSN begins with the digits 042, which are among only a select few reserved for Connecticut residents.

Obama never lived or worked in that state! Therefore, there is no reason on earth for his SSN to start with the digits 042. None whatsoever!

Now comes the best part! Ludwigspent the final months of his life in Hawaii, where he died.

Conveniently, Obama’s grandmother, Madelyn Payne Dunham, worked part-time in the Probate Office in the Honolulu Hawaii Courthouse, and therefore had access to the SSNs of deceased individuals.

The Social Security Administration was never informed of Ludwig’s death, and because he never received Social Security benefits there were no benefits to stop and therefore, no questions were ever raised.

The suspicion, of course, is that Dunham, knowing her grandson was not a U.S. Citizen, either because he was born in Kenya or became a citizen of Indonesia upon his adoption by Lolo Soetoro simply scoured the probate records until she found someone who died who was not receiving Social Security benefits, and selected Mr. LudwigsConnecticut SSN for Obama.

Just wait until Trump gets past the birth certificate and onto the issue of Barry O’s use of a stolen SSN. You will see leftist heads exploding, because they will have no way of defending Obama. Although many Americans do not understand the meaning of the term “natural born” there are few who do not understand that if you are using someone else’s SSN it is a clear indication of fraud.”

BETA-TEST: ELECTION 2012

Are we living in a parallel universe?  What America heard and what America knows surely leads to this conclusion.  Before we go any further, fix the data on this chart firmly in your subconscious and, neither listening left or listening right, do what you know in your heart you MUST do in November.

Contrary to many opinions, the Obama address was not all bad.  Number one, Michelle Obama looked exquisite in that bright blue dress.  Number two, if Barack follows thru on this it would be great.  Stop ALL insider trading within the congress in some sneaky attempt to enrich themselves in exchange for providing  favorable legislation from committtes on which they sit.

If you think this was not a trial run for the Obama Campaign rhetoric in the oncoming months, think again.  Team Obama has had Romney in their sights as the probable GOP nominee for months.  While not mentioning Romney by name, of course, the President threw several barbs Romney’s way last night.  Point one was Warren Buffet’s secretary sitting next to Michelle.  Obama also said, “Tax reform should follow the Buffet rule;  if you make more than $1 million a year, you should not pay less than 30% in taxes.  Romney had just released his tax returns which revealed he paid a rate of under 15% on his income.  Obama also used the word “fair” several times through out his address when referring to Romney.  When Obama uses this word this is barely disguised code for class-warfare.

Obama remains sold out to the “Greenie” mindset.  While he is smart enough to know that the Sierra Club is not key to his re-election, his decision (without elaboration) to nix the Keystone XL pipeline continues to demonstrate this belief.  With Al Gore backing his decision, I would suppose Obama considers all this “settled science.”  Solyndra, the Lil Kennedy bankrupt project, and numerous other foundering and nearly insolvent companies are a mere distraction.  In last night’s address, Obama continued to stress the importance of this “innovative” and “clean” energy approach.  He is going to get the Defense Department, and particularly the Navy, involved.  (I would have thought perhaps Defense had a somewhat more important mission.)

As the minutes became what seemed to be hours and then days, it occured to me that this speech was not a determined “To do List” but more of a “Wish List.”  I thought of an Amazon.com Gift Registry, as a matter of fact.

You are aware that a sort of “Bingo List” was floating around the cubicles these past days about words Obama would use to pepper his speech and to “instruct”/guide his subjects.  Here are just a few.  Did you pick up on many?  “Investment” (Spending taxpayer money on Obama re-election constituencies such as government employee unions.)  “Sacrifice” (Tax Hikes)  “Regulations” (The government leash attached to the choke collar around the neck of the economy)  “Obstructionists” (House Republican lawmakers who have actually passed a budget, NOT the Senate ProgLibs who have refused to pass a budget for over 1,000 days)  “I” or “Me” (Center of the known universe.

Domestically, Obama is in deep doo-doo, as proven by the chart shown at the beginning of this article.  On the international scene, it is equally abominable, if not worse.  He did give credit to Seal Team Six for taking out bin Laden and then he put on his “professor” hat and instructed us that as a nation we need to respond as the Seals, with teamwork.  Additionally, we would almost have thought he led that charge himself.  He moved fom this episode to the current Taliban status with this, “The Taliban momentum has been broken and some troops in Afghanistan have begun coming home.”  His latest Intelligence Estimate suggests the Taliban will continue playing along with the idea of “talks” while continuing to stall until troops leave.  At that point, they and the War Lords will reestablish control.

                                                            A recent nightmare

The poor guy just can’t seem to ever be the leader America wants and so badly needs.  He has the audacity to call for government regulatory restraint after ramming the behemoth and onerous Obamacare and the Dodd-Frank finance Bills down American throats.  In this SAME speech, he calls for even MORE new Obama Regime agencies.  He now wants to establish a Trade Enforcement Unit and a Financial Crimes Unit.

He smiles and tells us “America is back!”

Karl Marx, from time to time, spoke a few grains of truth.  He once stated, “History repeats itself…first as tragedy, second as farce.”

Bill, Meet Barack. Barack, Um, Never Mind…

The Bill Of Rights (as approved by the TSA)

If you plan on watching the President’s State of the Union Speech this evening, please take a moment to check out the Rights granted to you by courtesy of a series of Amendments to the Constitution known as the ”Bill of Rights”.

No, not the redacted Rights (above) granted by the TSA,  but, rather, the ACTUAL Bill of Rights, given to you by a bunch of old White guys who cared more about your Freedom than the man currently serving as the President, the Commander In Chief, the Leader in Absentia, President Barack Hussein Obama [APPLAUSE]!

If you find the President violating ANY of your Rights during this evening’s speech, please feel free to print out the following listing and check off the violations put forth by the Teleprompter, um, er, President.  Put a nice big X on any Amendment he’s trampled upon this evening while he’s re-hashing speeches of the past two years.

For Example (por ejemplo):

  • Government taking over private industries?
  • Government running guns into Mexico to promote ‘Gun Control’?
  • Government mandating that you buy health care insurance from them (or anyone)?
  • Government telling you what you may, or may not, eat?
  • Government working for the good of Unions at the expense of the private sector?
  • Government monitoring / managing the exchange of information on the Internet?
VIOLATIONS!

Tomorrow, or later tonight (if you can’t sleep), please submit your “Violations to the Bill of Rights As Outlined In the State of the Union Speech 2012″ and send them to me here.

My mailing address is:

This, of course is not my ACTUAL address, as providing an actual address would inspire Crazies from across the country to seek me out and hurt me (all in the name of ‘fairness’).  Well, at least they would TRY to hurt me.  Luckily for me I used to be big and strong, now I’m only, well, you know; ’big’ (still not sure if this is a ‘good thing’ or not…).
In closing, please refer to the following for your complete, your guaranteed, your God-given (oops, now I AM in trouble – ‘Crazy Alert’ Begins NOW!) Rights as granted to you via the first Ten Amendments to The Constitution.
Ladies, Gentlemen, Boys and Girls, I present to you - The Bill of Rights

If you read and understood the above Amendments – congratulations, you’re an informed American Citizen!

If you have not read, or understood the above?

Perhaps one day you can be President!

A word of warning though…  To get the ‘nod’, you’ll have to be a Progressive Liberal Democrat.  Unless of course, you’re Bernie Sanders, I, VT, in which case you’ll have to be a card-carrying Socialist Democrat.  In Democrat-speak – that’s a Weapons Grade Democrat…

Not that there’s anything wrong with that…

“We have been expecting businesses to provide health insurance coverage, but is this fair?  Or, should health insurance be like education, a public responsibility?” — Bernie Sanders

Opportunistic Little Twerp

“By rejecting the Keystone XL oil pipeline, President Obama did more than just pander to environmentalists. He shredded attempts by his handlers to cast him as a pragmatic and reasonable man who can appeal to independent voters.

Instead, he stands naked as an ideologue willing to sacrifice workers on the altar of special-interest politics.

Thousands of jobs were cast aside with no more thought than yesterday’s socks. Demolished, too, is the promised commitment to energy independence.

The $7 billion pipeline would carry Canadian oil to Gulf Coast ports. Despite three years of study by the State Department, Obama tried to put off the decision until after the election.

But Canada offered to change the route to avoid an aquifer in Nebraska, and unions demanded to know whether he would approve a permit, so Republicans put a 60-day deadline in December’s payroll-tax legislation.

Now we have undeniable proof of the president’s priorities. The man who insisted that “making sure jobs are available is the first thing I think about when I wake up every morning” was just reading empty words from a TelePrompter.

Obama didn’t even have the decency to explain himself, sending out a lame statement that hinted he wasn’t making a decision on the merits, only reacting to the deadline.

The suggestion that he might ultimately approve the project is a shameless bid to deny the obvious. He made his choice because that’s who he is.

Meanwhile, Canada, saying it is “profoundly disappointed,” is turning to Plan B. It likely will build a pipeline to its West Coast and sell the oil to China.”

OUR DIFFERENCES DEFINED

Are their two bodies of thought that separate so many Americans?  Perhaps there is some “common-ground?”  Then again, maybe not.  Lets investigate.

Here is one person’s take.  Maybe you will remember him.

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7fqCS7Y_kME&feature=player_embedded#!

Consider, for example, the following debates:  socialism versus a free-market economy, higher taxes versus lower taxes, more regulations versus deregulation, bigger government versus smaller government, federal control versus state/local control, government ownership versus private property, government run health insurance versus private health insurance, and coercion versus voluntary exchange.  All of these debates are differnt applications of the same principle, aren’t they?

The common element is this.  Do we want power and control to be centralized or decentralized?  Put another way, should power and control be in the hands of politicians and bureaucrats (Obama/Reid/Pelosi) or in the hands of individuals and private entities?  Consider what actually happens when your taxes are raised.  Your control over your own life is diminished and politician power is increased…control is centralized.

The most common words to describe the divide/sides of the aisle are “conservative” and “liberal.”  Neither are apt descriptions because things and definitions change over time.  Also, there are degrees within each category.  The terms “left” and “right” aren’t much better.  Furthermore, these terms have evolved over the years.  Those who described themselves as liberal one hundred years ago would now be called conservative, as an example.  Perhaps a better description today might be “centralized” versus “decentralized.”

This may sum up most people’s opinion, depending on how you look at it.  You making your own decisions leads to__________.   Obama making your decisions leads to__________.

A central difference between liberals and conservatives revolve around the issue of individual responsibility.  The more we take the power to choose away from individuals, the more we diminish the meaning of, and the opportunity for, individual responsibility.  If you do what you do because you are forced to, are you exercising morality?  Are you responsible for your actions?  The most insidious result of liberalism is that when control is centralized , so is morality.  Milton Friedman had a few thoughts on this.  Lets listen in as he educates Phil Donahue.

The Heritage Foundation, in their “Index of Economic Freedom,” confirms the well nigh perfect correlation between freedom and ecnomic vitality.  It confirms that freer economies are “more efficient at protecting the environment, better at improving health, better at enhancing life satisfaction, as well as overall happiness.

Obama lectures Joe-the-Plumber at “spreading the wealth.”  We would be better served to “spread the control.”  (Decentralize control, in other words.)

When making decisions with their own money, individuals are most motivated to make careful decisions that produce the desired results.  (Think back to what Friedman had to say.)  Individuals don’t typically spend their own money on mini-versions of “pork-barrel projects.”  When choices are made for you by the government, you will not automatically agree with them.  Consequently, centralization always involves force (laws).

Although not too classy, perhaps we should frame all discussions in terms of “centralization” versus “decentralization.”  In that way, we can always categorize the issues involved.  In addition to asking ourselves, “Is it Constitutional?” we could also ask, “Does it centralize or decentralize control?”

Just food for thought.  What think you?

Mark Steyn…Where Have All The Men Gone?

“In the centenary year of the most famous of all maritime disasters, we would do well to consider honestly the tale of the Titanic. When James Cameron made his movie, he was interested in everything except what the story was actually about. I confess I have very little memory of the film except for Kate Winslet’s lush full breasts and some tedious sub-Riverdance prancing in the hold, but what I do recall traduced the memory of honorable men: In my book, I cite First Officer William Murdoch. In real life, he threw deckchairs to passengers drowning in the water to give them something to cling to, and then he went down with the ship – the dull, decent thing, all very British, with no fuss. In Cameron’s movie, Murdoch takes a bribe and murders a third-class passenger. The director subsequently apologized to the First Officer’s hometown in Scotland and offered £5,000 toward a memorial, which, converted into Hollywood dollars, equals rather less than what Cameron and his family paid for dinner after the Oscars.

On the Titanic, the male passengers gave their lives for the women and would never have considered doing otherwise. On the Costa Concordia, in the words of a female passenger, “There were big men, crew members, pushing their way past us to get into the lifeboat.” After similar scenes on the MV Estonia a few years ago, Roger Kohen of the International Maritime Organization told Time magazine: “There is no law that says women and children first. That is something from the age of chivalry.”

If, by “the age of chivalry,” you mean our great-grandparents’ time.

In fact, “women and children first” can be dated very precisely. On Feb. 26, 1852, HMS Birkenhead was wrecked off the coast of Cape Town while transporting British troops to South Africa. There were, as on the Titanic, insufficient lifeboats. The women and children were escorted to the ship’s cutter. The men mustered on deck. They were ordered not to dive in the water lest they risk endangering the ladies and their young charges by swamping the boats. So they stood stiffly at their posts as the ship disappeared beneath the waves. As Kipling wrote:

“We’re most of us liars, we’re ‘arf of us thieves, an’ the rest of us rank as can be,

But once in a while we can finish in style (which I ‘ope it won’t ‘appen to me).”

Sixty years later, the men on the Titanic – liars and thieves, wealthy and powerful, poor and obscure – found themselves called upon to “finish in style,” and did so. They had barely an hour to kiss their wives goodbye, watch them clamber into the lifeboats, and sail off without them. They, too, ‘ope’d it wouldn’t ‘appen to them, but, when it did, the social norm of “women and children first” held up under pressure and across all classes.

Today there is no social norm, so it’s every man for himself – operative word “man,” although not many of the chaps on the Titanic would recognize those on the Costa Concordia as “men.” From a grandmother on the latter: “I was standing by the lifeboats and men, big men, were banging into me and knocking the girls.”

Whenever I write about these subjects, I receive a lot of mail from men along the lines of this correspondent:

“The feminists wanted a gender-neutral society. Now they’ve got it. So what are you complaining about?”

And so the manly virtues (if you’ll forgive a quaint phrase) shrivel away to the so-called “man caves,” those sad little redoubts of beer and premium cable sports networks.

We are beyond social norms these days. A woman can be a soldier. A man can be a woman. A 7-year-old cross-dressing boy can join the Girl Scouts in Colorado because he “identifies” as a girl. It all adds to life’s rich tapestry, no doubt. But I can’t help wondering, when the ship hits the fan, how many of us will still be willing to identify as a man.

Where have all the men gone?”
